Decoy kibbutz that made illegal weapons

A DECOY kibbutz constructed on a hill near Rehovot attempted in then-Palestine to disguise an underground clandestine arms production facility from being discovered by British soldiers stationed nearby, now forms the Ayalon Institute museum and visitor centre.

Members of the kibbutz operated a very noisy laundry and bakery in order to drown out the 24/7 sounds of heavy machinery.

It was manufacturing bullets desperately needed by the pre-state Jewish military organisation, Haganah.

The laundry became such a success in not only disguising the machinery that a branch was also opened up in the nearby town of Rehovot.
