Sterling ends 33-year record

FA Cup final
Manchester City 6 Watford 0

Manchester City recorded the highest cup final score in 116 years while also claiming the first ever domestic treble.

But there was another record the back to back champions broke - Raheem Sterling's double ended a 33-year wait for an Englishman to score in a final at Wembley for City.

The last one was the late John Bookbinder in 1986 in a curtain raiser for the Full Members Cup final.

His sister, broadcaster Susan Bookbinder, is now hoping for some acknowledgement from City about John's feat.

As for this game, Watford put up a good fight, but once David Silva fired home the opening goal in the 26th minute, there was only going to be one winner.

Really Watford should have been ahead before Silva's strike. Roberto Pereyra was put clean through, but City keeper Ederson came racing out of his goal to save with his legs.

City doubled their lead in the 38th minute, although there was a question mark over the scorer.

Bernardo Silva floated a superb ball to the back post and Gabriel Jesus -- a surprise choice over Sergio Aguero - put the ball past Heurelho Gomes. Raheem Sterling smashed it into the back of the net, although it looked as if the ball was already over the line.

In the second half, Bruyne came on in the 55th minute for the impressive Riyad Mahrez, another surprise inclusion.

And within a few minutes KDB had added the third after a slick move saw Jesus slide him in and he rounded the keeper.

Seven minutes later, Jesus raced the length of the Watford half to slip the ball past Gomes. By now City players were queueing up to score. But it was Sterling who scored twice to make it 6-0.

City could have had double figures, although it would have been harsh on Watford, whose fans were superb throughout.

Despite the scoreline, the Watford fans made a tremendous amount of noise while waving their flags.

Surprisingly, the man of the match award was given to KDB despite being on the pitch for only 35 minutes.

Sterling, Jesus and Vincent Kompany, rolling back the years, must have all been in with a shout.

Watfordhead coach Javi Gracia said he was proud of his players and fans.
