HARRY Potter star Miriam Margolyes is hoping Jewish Telegraph readers can perform more magic for her.

The veteran actress has already had success through Roots Directory with previous searches.

Miriam is now looking for a Leeds-based family called Friend. Henry and Selina Friend lived in North Villas, Leeds. Henry died in 1908.

The couple had at least 12 children - Rebecca, Hetty, Dinah (married a Frankel), Jacob Louis, Isidore, Cissie, Ethel, Morris, Cyril, Braham Julian, Kathleen (married Sidney Fay).

Henry's brother, Abraham, lived in Thirsk, Yorkshire. Some of the family went to South Africa but Miriam can't find the ones who stayed in the UK.

MRS A Anderton would like to hear from anyone who remembers or has information about the Laskier family from Liverpool.

Her great-grandfather Isaac Laskier was from Poland and, in 1862, married Harriet Berk in Dublin before they settled in Liverpool.

They had 10 children, of whom Rebecca married Michael Levitsky in 1882 in Liverpool; Leon married Nellie Torlowsky in Whitechapel in 1895; Jacob married Sarah Neiman in 1897 in Liverpool; Miriam married Jonas Harry Herzberg in Liverpool in 1910; and David married Cecile Goldstern in Paris in 1919.

BETTY Gardiner of Sussex is researching the roots of her father Abraham Benjamin Davis of Birmingham, who died in 1937.

Abraham emigrated from Utena, Lithuania, with his father, mother and brother, arriving in Grimsby in 1874. Betty believes the family's name was Izvozchik.

They later moved to Birmingham, where Abraham became well-known in the city, and was maybe a member of the Jewish Board of Guardians.

JOHN Ward of Harpurhey is trying to trace Muriel Hilton whose parents fostered him for a year around 1963 in their home in Stamford Street, Old Trafford, Salford.

Muriel worked for CIBA Geigy in Trafford Park and married David, a man more Orthodox than she was. John, who calls himself her 'little brother', says: ''I would love to hear from her. I have loads to tell her.''

JACOB Rosen of Jerusalem is researching his late mother's family Koenigsbuch.

Jacob recently discovered that two young brothers from the Koenigsbuch family from Hamburg were on the kindertransport. Father Adolf and his wife died in the Holocaust.

EDNA Levi of Leeds is trying to trace Perry Grossman on behalf of a cousin.

Perry married in Leeds in the l940s to a man whose first name was Karel and it is believed they moved to Ipswich and then Nottingham. They may have had a son called Roger.

Perry's mother was Bessie Grossman (nee Fogal) who was born in Russia, and she was the sister of Barnett and Harris Fogal - all of whom moved to Leeds in the l980's.

Adele of Leeds was the daughter of Morris Levenson and his wife, whose maiden name was Rosenthal.

David's grandparents, Abraham and Annie Levenson, had seven children - Max Isaac, Kate, David, Harris, Morris, Michael and Wolf (David's father) - all born in Leeds between 1891 and 1900 at 81 Concord Street.
