MARJORIE Clark of Lincolnshire discovered she was adopted when she found a copy of her birth certificate in 1940.

The certificate showed that her real mother was Sadie (Sarah) Harrison who lived at 49 Portman Street, South Manchester.

Marjorie, who has a 45-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old granddaughter, writes: ''With the help of friends and, in particular, a lady called Judith Baldry, who worked in the Manchester Central Library, I found that my mother's parents were Eli and Elizabeth Harrison.''

She then made contact with Ros Livshin who found a record of the Harrisons in the 1891 Census. It showed that Eli was born in Russia and Elizabeth in Birmingham.

''Ros thought Pincus Lesser, born in Poland and naturalised at 229 Great Colomore Street, Birmingham, might have some connection with Elizabeth's father, David Lesser.''

Eli and Elizabeth were both buried at Whitefield's Phillips Park cemetery. Eli died at the age of 51 on December 5, 1916 whilst Elizabeth passed away, aged 65, on March 22, 1930.

ROBERT Clark is an American Indian researching two topics on World War Two history.

''I very much need the input of Jewish citizens,'' Robert of Illinois says. ''The first project is on women and children during the war years.

''I especially want to hear from anyone whose childhood or teen years were during World War Two. I also want to know about the daily lives of Jewish women during the war.

''The second project is on the Jewish community in the Asian-Pacific theatre of war.

''I especially am interested in anyone of Jewish ancestry who was interred by the Japanese.

''I am seeking duplicate or unwanted photographs or postcards that depict Jewish people, events and synagogues. The 1940s time frame is of special interest.''

They had a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Wooley (b 1946) who married Roy Gregory Wicks (d 1986), and they in turn had two children, Shelly and Naomi Wicks.
