99-year-old journalist still making news

“RETIREMENT? I don’t know what that word means, I will have to look it up in a dictionary — so long as I can go and work, I will.”

Those are the words of 99-year-old Walter Bingham, the British-Israeli man who holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest journalist.

And he has plans to improve the record.

Having entered his 100th year yesterday, Walter is also celebrating almost 20 years in the field.

Emigrating to Israel in 2004, at the age of 80, he applied for a job at Kol Israel, one of the country’s leading broadcasters, but was told he was past the station’s statutory retirement age.

Undeterred, he continued his pursuit of work and found a job with Israel National News.

There, he hosted Walter’s World, a weekly radio magazine programme, and, since 2016, The Walter Bingham File on Israel News Talk Radio.

He has also been also a regular contributor to The Jerusalem Post and The Jerusalem Report.

“In my old age, I am doing more work than I have ever done before,” he told me. “I write about politics and all sorts, but no one tells me what to write.

“I am leading a happy life — I don’t know I am old. On a good day I feel like 40 and a bad day I feel like 50 — the only time I actually know [I’m old] is when I pass a mirror!”

Born Wolfgang Billig and raised in Karlsruhe, Germany, Walter witnessed some of the most historic events leading up to the Holocaust.
