Perfect timing for Jed’s delve into the dark side of Russia

IT is only at 48 that Jed Rothstein is following in his maternal grandfather’s footsteps.

The filmmaker is the grandson of Richard Sherman who, together with brother Robert, is responsible for more motion picture musical scores than any other songwriting team in film history.

Their tunes were incorporated into numerous movies, including Disney’s Mary Poppins, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

They were also portrayed in the hit 2013 film Saving Mr Banks —about the development of Mary Poppins — and wrote It’s a Small World (After All), for the theme park attraction of the same name at Disney World in Florida.

And, for the first time, Jed has taken a musical route, as he has written the lyrics for Rudy! A Documusical, about former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani, which will screen at the forthcoming Tribeca Film Festival.

“I collaborated with some great Broadway composers and it was the first time I got to do some musical work, which I really enjoyed,” Jed told me from his office in Brooklyn. “It was a lot of fun.”

His grandfather has been a clear influence in his life, but he decided to go down a more serious road.

And his latest work, Once Upon a Time in Londongrad, began on Sky Documentaries yesterday.

The six-part series centres on a spate of unusual deaths that occurred on British soil between 2003 and 2016 involving 14 individuals — oligarchs, financiers, lawyers, spies, whistleblowers and a scientist — all of whom could be seen to have posed some kind of threat to Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.
